The vicar trying to silence his own church bells because they're keeping him awake at night

A vicar has failed in his bid to silence the clock chimes at his own church because they are keeping him awake at night.

The Reverend David Parry had written to the town council about the noise from the clock at St Mary's which sounds every 15 minutes 24 hours a day and has done since the 19th century.

He said it was disturbing his sleep and he was worried about the affect on other residents, businesses and tourists.

After receiving the letter, the town council decided to survey 400 residents in Conwy to get their view and they overwhelming backed the chimes.

Out of 210 responses, only six agreed with Mr Parry.

How to deal with noisy neighbours

The vicar, however, remained magnanimous in defeat.

He told NorthWalesLive : "I am grateful to the town council for considering this. Their decision not to silence the bells overnight won't change my really positive relationship with them or the way we serve this lovely town together.

"Conwy is a breathtakingly beautiful place to live and work.  St Mary’s is open every weekday 10am to 4pm and Saturdays 11am to 3pm with a team of 60 volunteers ready to welcome locals and tourists.

"I look forward to meeting anyone who has been intrigued by this story to find out more about our stunning medieval church, which is almost a century older than the castle and town."

Anwen Jones, who lives in the town, voted to keep the chimes.

She said: "I'm glad common sense has prevailed, those clock chimes have been chiming since the 19th century and are part of the town's fabric.

"They aren't very loud, and I'm happy I'll continue to hear them during the night if I'm awake as I find them comforting."
