The 'very important' journey Willian went on this summer that culminated in Copa America glory

Willian made his first appearance of the season for Chelsea on Sunday after an incredible summer for the club's new No.10.

Not named in the squad for Brazil's Copa America campaign on home soil, the 31-year-old eventually got the call to link up with the rest of the team when he was away on holiday following Neymar's ankle injury ahead of the tournament.

Incredibly the call came during his pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Capernaum with his family, friends and pastor, with the player claiming that it was "a testament of God's power" that he got the nod to join up with The Selecao when in such a holy place.

Willian played his part in Brazil's run to the final against Peru, although he missed out on the triumph due to an injury picked up in the semi-final win over Argentina.

It truly was an incredible summer for the attacker and he opened up to Chelsea's matchday programme about his experience prior to his return to west London.

"I always say that the plans of God are better than our plans, and this summer I experienced that for myself," he said.

"In July, I won the Copa America, my first trophy with Brazil.

"It was a dream come true for me, after eight years playing for the national team, but I wasn't even in the squad when the first list was announced at the beginning of the summer.

"I was a bit sad when I heard wasn't on the squad list, but I organised my holidays and took a very important journey - a pilgrimage.

"I went to Jerusalem and Capernaum - where Jesus performed many of his miracles - with my family, my pastor and some friends.

"We went there to follow where Jesus went, to see places where he lived, and the experience was unbelievable.

"Incredibly, after five days there I received a call from Brazil and they said, "We want you to join the squad."

"It was an incredible feeling and, for me, a testament of God's power, because I was there, in the Holy Land, when I received this call to join the national team.

"Then we won the Copa America at the end - it's amazing!

"So, now, if people don't believe in God they can have proof that God is faith."
