The vegan parmo is 'back for good' at a Newcastle cafe

Vegan parmos are 'back for good' at a Newcastle cafe.

Junk It Up, in Pink Lane, Newcastle, has added meat and dairy-free parmos to its menu full-time, following a successful trial.

Junk It Up uses 'fricken' - a soy-based fried chicken substitute - and vegan dairy-free 'cheese' for its take on the Teesside takeaway treat.

Writing on Facebook, Junk it Up said: "It’s back! Our famous vegan parmo, and this time it’s back for good."

Vegans and veggies can thank Brit Award winner Sam Fender for the new addition, as Junk It Up was inspired to make an animal-free parmo after hearing Sam plugging the business on Radio One.

Sam, from North Shields, was asked what American singer Billie Eilish should do on her first visit to the North East, as she is due to play at Radio One's Big Weekend in Middlesbrough .

He suggested Billie should try a Teesside parmo. But - after hearing she is a vegan - Sam pointed her to Newcastle's Junk It Up.

In response, Junk It Up put vegan parmo on the menu for a week. But they've proved so popular, that the vegan parmo is there to stay. Newcastle cafe is selling vegan parmos this week - thanks in part to Sam Fender
