"There are many ways across the GLA where by working smarter we can deliver the same or better outcomes without spending as much money," said Sir Simon Milton at the start of a meeting of the Budget and Performance committee held earlier this week.
"What's been your biggest failure, then?" asked Labour's ever-obliging John Biggs. There came a long pause. And then:
"Well I think it's too early to have had a biggest failure...I've been surprised that it has not been possible to reduce the budget for the fireworks display on New Year's eve, which has been an extremely expensive outing, about 1.6 million pounds."
That was on Wednesday afternoon. Then, on Thursday, there came a press release:
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has ordered a spectacular fireworks display to kick off the New Year in the capital with a bang. Live television coverage around the globe will ensure the iconic skyline of the West End is seen from Beijing to Brazil, New York and New Delhi as Big Ben strikes midnight.
Bravo Boris! Speak up for London, my fine fellow! Speak up!
"I can think of no better city to spend New Year's Eve and these fireworks will remind Britain and the world of the joys and charms of this city all year round. I'm particularly keen to remind the global business elite that London offers them unique opportunities and an inimitable lifestyle."
Sounds as though Sir Simon will have to "work smarter" indeed if that reminder isn't to turn into a damp squib.
