The uphill battle Cardiff Blues, Ospreys and Scarlets face to reach the Guinness PRO14 title play-offs

There are just two rounds of fixtures remaining in the Guinness PRO14 with three teams already having qualified for the title play-offs.

Leinster will be top seeds while Glasgow Warriors and Munster are also guaranteed home ties at the knockout stage.

Seven teams – Connacht, Cardiff Blues, Ospreys, Ulster, Benetton, Edinburgh and the Scarlets – are competing for the other three places.

Here’s the situation as it stands...

CONFERENCE A

Glasgow and Munster will make up the top two but are fighting it out to finish first to book a direct route to a home semi-final.

The runner-up will also be at home in their quarter-final against the third placed finisher from Conference B.

Connacht are third in the Conference A table, four points ahead of Cardiff Blues and seven in front of the Ospreys.

The Blues were swept away in the final half-hour at Munster while the Ospreys stayed in the hunt for the play-offs with a bonus point victory over the Cheetahs in South Africa.

Cardiff Blues' big new signings are not really what they needed as their true weakness is exposed

A win for Connacht, who clung on to beat Zebre 6-5 in Italy, over the Blues in Galway next weekend would see them fill Conference A’s final place in the play-offs.

However, a Blues triumph would take it to the final weekend, when they face the Ospreys at the Principality Stadium on Judgement Day with Connacht having to go to Munster.

Four-time champions Ospreys would also still be in the race in that event if they can beat Southern Kings in South Africa next weekend.

CONFERENCE B

Defending champions Leinster wrapped up top spot and No.1 seed status weeks ago and have been using some recent matches to develop players.

There’s a four-way scrap for the other two places with nine points covering second-placed Ulster (54), Benetton (52), Edinburgh (51) and the Scarlets (45).

The Scarlets suffered a huge set-back by blowing a 12-point lead to lose at home to Edinburgh.

But they will target maximum points against bottom of the table Zebre in Llanelli and the Dragons on Judgement Day at the Principality Stadium.

Ulster, losers at Glasgow on Friday night, are away at Edinburgh next weekend before hosting Leinster in their final match.

Edinburgh’s other game is at Glasgow with surprise package Benetton, who drew at Leinster tonight, entertaining Munster before an away derby with Zebre.

THE ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONS CUP

The top three finishers from each Conference qualify automatically for the European showpiece.

The fourth-placed finisher from each Conference will clash in a play-off for the final place.

Even if the Blues and Ospreys were to be eliminated from the PRO14 shakedown next weekend they would be facing each other in Cardiff for a place in the Champions Cup play-off.

The winner of their Judgement Day battle could face the Scarlets in it, if the former PRO12 champions win their two remaining fixtures but finish fourth in Conference B.

The epic last-minute try that helped Wales beat the best team in the world
