The unusual Valleys bungalow with sweeping views and a surprise hidden basement

Even finding this incredible property is tricky if you haven't done your research before setting off as even putting the postcode into your satnav might not get you right to the door.

The property is nestled into the gentle slope of a Valleys hillside with the turning off the main road for the country lane easy to miss if you're not concentrating.

Once you've found it wander up this quiet lane as it slowly ascends the wooded hill and, after passing the rear gardens of a few homes, the lane expands and rewards you with the garden gates of two distinctive bungalows.

This duo of detached abodes are a bit of a surprise to discover – partially hidden from view from the main road and not the typical Valleys houses that you might expect to find across the majority of the area.

And one of them is now for sale as a renovation project offering not just a large plot that oozes potential with four bedrooms and views across the valley but a huge lower level that cannot be seen from the garden gate.

In fact as you walk up the drive, enter the house, or even stroll around to the sunny terrace that hugs the house you still don't know it's there – literally underneath your feet. But it is actually hiding in plain sight under the flat lower level below you that looks like an additional garden terrace but is actually the roof of the hidden basement.

This additional space waiting to be discovered is, according to the estate agent selling the home, actually two large basements which span the entire footprint of the property that sits one level above it.

Both neighbouring basements have a glazed door that gives you access from the lower lawned portion of the substantial garden and both have a window.

And both provide masses of storage at the moment but masses of potential for the future.

With planning consent this extra space could be the coolest of games rooms with a bar and home cinema opening out to an indoor swimming pool and spa area.

But if you want more space for the entertaining inside there's plenty of flat land just outside the basement for the party to spill out onto a newly-built outside pool area.

In fact the land that comes with the bungalow is ample to place the pool wherever you want it as there are a number of flat terraced areas – unusual to find at a hillside property.

And that's the beauty of this abode – it is a most unusual proposition offering unseen space inside and bundles of space outside to use as extra potential to extend or just to enjoy as a peaceful place to relax and absorb the sweeping valley views towards Merthyr Tydfil.

It's a house that offers the new owner a renovation project that will transform the home from a comfortable four-bed bungalow dating back to the 1960s and 70s to a dream home in a quiet but well-located spot.

A new owner may consider squashing this period home and building a modern replacement but this option, and any extensions and reworking of the spaces, especially the basement will, of course, require planning permission.

Above the basement, in the main chalet bungalow, there are two floors in which you will find multiple rooms.

The hall leads you into an area that contains maybe one of the most recognisable features from the mid-century era – a statement slatted staircase that is a slice of design from the past.

The indication that this house was going to be a home dating back decades greets you as soon as you arrive thanks to the substantial chimney clad in tactile, tonal stone that also cloaks the front entrance in its statement style.

There's an homage to this stonework inside the house too in the main living room.

In here one wall features the distinctive stone style that also includes built-in fireplace, cupboards, and even bench seating either side of the fireplace.

This living room is the heart of this home as it flows directly into the dining space via a large archway which then flows into the kitchen in an open-plan layout.

The floor appears to be original wood and with some sanding could be the crowning glory of this space – along with the mesmerising views from the big, curved bay window.

This lovely and light space connects directly to the sunny garden terrace via a glass door and, with some updating, will be the place where everyone will want to gather and socialise.

For anyone wanting a quiet moment this house can offer versatile space without even having to descend to the bonus basement underneath.

There are two bedrooms on this ground floor and with another two upstairs one of them could become a home office if required or a cosy snug away from the larger socialising space.

Alternatively a home office could be created within the detached garage, as there is ample on-site parking, or the garden itself is easily big enough to welcome a cabin garden office.

If four bedrooms is not required back within the main house then the first floor, where there are currently two bedrooms and a bathroom, could be reworked into a spectacular master suite with an en suite and maybe even space for a dressing room or walk-in wardrobe.

Of course from the garden and lower floors views of the surrounding trees and hills can be appreciated as this house is in an elevated position but the higher up the house you climb the better the aspect.

And from this master bedroom the views of the River Taff valley and hills beyond are the best. The space could utilise its prime position at the property further by the integration of a Juliet balcony or floor-to-ceiling windows.

The house can be found on the slopes of the village of Troedyrhiw, which has a population of around 5,000.

About three miles outside Merthyr Tydfil there are numerous outdoor areas to explore not too far away from the front door including the beautiful Taff Trail, which continues into Cardiff.

BikePark Wales can be found on the hilltops and through the woodland on the opposite side of the valley and Brecon Mountain Railway is just north of Merthyr Tydfil and offers an unusual and delightful way to see the surrounding landscape.

But if the bungalow is to be your new home then bikes and steam trains need to be nearer the middle to end of your list of things to do.

Surely near the top of the list, and dominating it, must be renovating this property full of potential and creating the best place to party in the valley – especially in that converted secret basement.

The bungalow with the hidden basement is on the market for offers in the region of £380,000 with estate agent Ramsay & White. Call them on 01443 803510 to find out more.
