The unusual snack pairing Edinburgh locals remember from their childhood

When it comes to morning or lunch-time treats, today's children tend to ask for a Nutella or peanut butter piece, Kinder chocolate or Dairylea Lunchables, but back in the day when funds were tight, mums and dads had to get creative.

To the current generation, the snacks of yesteryear may sound a little strange, but back then people made do with whatever they happened to have stocked in the kitchen cupboard and you had to like it or lump it.

In decades past, Edinburgh kids knew all too well of the joys of a humble jam piece, a glass of milk and a plain digestive, but they also learned that pretty much anything can go between two bits of bread.

Things like banana on buttered toast, crisp sandwiches and even just a sugar piece were a staple for older generations.

On our Facebook page, we posted a photo showing banana slices on bread, and it brought the memories flooding for loads of Edinburgh Live readers - some even said they still eat to this very day and with a few very creative modifications.

Over the years, many locals have enjoyed different variations of the sandwich, adding other toppings like sugar, sauces and peanut butter. It may seem a bit out there to some, but it's not too dissimilar to toppings you'd have on a crepe or a pancake.

Most people, however, were taken aback by the fact the banana in the picture was sliced, stating that only mashed banana would do.

Susan Edmonds recalled: "As a child I had this with brown sugar sprinkled on top."

Tracy Hoop said: "Once a week treat on white bread, Lurpak and a pinch of salt. Absolutely gorgeous."

Val Tennant posted: "Has to have butter and be mashed, on a roll white bread or toast."

Yvonne House wrote: "Better on brown bread with butter and mashed."

Edward Reid said: "Missing butter and a sprinkle of sugar, ideally it should be mashed and spread evenly."

Audrey Iskander commented: "Just finished one!! But there has to be butter on the bread and be mashed."

"Try with just a little spritz of fresh lemon juice," recommended Linda Tonkinson,"plus the sugar of course, delicious."

Primrose Lane said: "I toast white bread then add sliced bananas then add cheese and grill it . I have this for breakfast everyday."

Thamsin Morris-Kuder said they still swear by a banana piece - despite living in the United States, where the practice is considered very alien.

Thamsin said: "Thanks to our mum we were introduced to this! I still eat it today. Very few in the U.S. understand it or want it."

Mary Dixon added: "Prefer mine squashed with a handful of raisins scattered on top and, of course, butter on the bread first."

Of course, not everyone is a fan of the age-old pairing.

Terri Turnbull said: "I had one yesterday, asked my great-grandson if he wanted one, he looked disgusted at me and said, 'no thanks, Nana, yuk,' - that’s what he thought, lol."

Sandra Morris simply added: "Just no."
