The unusual signs that mean you’ve had too much sun from swelling to fainting

The summer weather is well and truly here, with temperatures expected to hit 30C for some on Monday.

Met Eireann has forecast a brutal change in conditions next Tuesday, so it’s likely that sun worshippers will head out to enjoy the remaining heat.

In Ireland, intense sunshine can be hard to come by, so our skin isn’t used to the intense heat - leaving many with a red hue at the end of the day.

Because of this, health experts are warning that there is such a thing as too much sun exposure, and sometimes, it can have serious consequences, including:

  • Hyponatremia, or water intoxication
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Dehydration
  • Heatstroke
  • Sunburn

The most common effect is sunburn, and most people only realise how bad it is when they get home after a day of bathing or swimming.

So throughout the day, you should be looking out for these common symptoms of sunburn, which include:

  • Reddish skin
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Fatigue
  • Hot skin temperatures

In more unusual cases, too much sun can even cause:

  • Rash
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Dizziness
  • Chills

Pain and redness tend to be greatest during the first six to 48 hours, but if any of the above symptoms occur, contact your doctor.

One of the worst things that can happen with too much sun is a second-degree burn, which is much more serious. Symptoms include:

  • Blistering
  • Oozing
  • Dehydration
  • Edema, or swelling of tissue
  • Fainting

Again, if you have been in the sun all day and notice some of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor.
