The unpopular former Liverpool player who inspired Sadio Mane's sparkling career

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has revealed the one player he idolised growing up was former Senegal international El Hadji Diouf.

The controversial ex-Reds striker is an unpopular figure among some fans after an underwhelming Anfield tenure between 2002 and 2005.

Earlier this year Diouf also caused a stir when he claimed Liverpool had "bottled the title" to Manchester City.

But Mane has admitted the 38-year-old was his inspiration when growing up in Bambali.

Former Liverpool player Florent Sinama-Pongolle for French TV channel Canal+ asked: "When [Salif] Diao and Diouf played here did you think one day it would be possible for you?"

Mane responded: "Yes of course. Especially the case with Diouf. I remember when I was still in the village living with my parents, I used to watch him.

"I believe he's one of the people who most inspired me to become a footballer. He's one of my favourite players."

The 27-year-old striker was also asked what his team-mate Roberto Firmino is like behind the scenes.

"Bobby is always smiling and very quiet. All his energy is out on the pitch," Mane told.

"I think he's the person who sacrifices the most in the team. You don't often see a forward of that quality who sacrifices so much.

"It's the first time in my life seeing this kind of player. Today, he's one of the best players in the world."
