The unofficial PC port of Mario 64 now has HD mods

Mario is playable on PC thanks to an unofficial port (Picture: Nintendo)

Nintendo isn't a fan of the unofficial Mario 64 PC port that has been making the rounds online, so much so that it has sent copyright notices to the sites hosting it.

This, however, hasn't stopped people playing and even creating mods for it.

A mod, if you've never come across one before, is shorthand for modifying a game, such as creating custom levels, objects, characters or even a stand-alone game.

In the case of Mario 64, the 1996 Nintendo 64 game, creator Armanda Arrendondo has unleashed a full PC mod which utilises models from Super Mario Galaxy and injects them into the beloved game.

It does look good, but it's slightly jarring to see HD characters here considering how outdated the graphics are in these old games' low-poly worlds.

Here's a full look at the HD world of Mario 64 on PC:

A bunch of other mods have been showcased on YouTube on the channel Unreal. The channel isn't affiliated in any way to the creators of the Unreal Engine, it just happens to have a similar name.

On the channel, you can see another mod which is looking to upscale the rest of the world, such as rendering Peach's Castle in full HD, which might eventually extend to the entire game world.

More mods have been made to use cheats and even change the original draw distance, letting you see more of the game world. If there's one surefire way to measure a PC game's success, it's when people are avidly making mods of it.

The Mario 64 mods are all being worked on a dedicated Discord channel, which modders and gamers are using to communicate, plan out and share more creative mods made for the game.

This PC port is not supported or linked to Nintendo in any way.
