The unnoticed Tanguy Ndombele contribution that highlights his stunning rise under Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham team are now seeing the very best of Tanguy Ndombele.

Signed in a club-record move from Lyon in July 2019, his first season in north London was one to forget.

Unable to put together a consistent run in the side following fitness issues and some niggling injuries, it appeared that the Frenchman's time at Tottenham was over before it had even started.

Hooked at the break in the 1-1 draw against Burnley following a poor showing at Turf Moor, Ndombele barely featured after the Premier League restart and was an unused substitute on four of his six occasions in the matchday squad.

Mourinho press conference after Sheffield United 1-3 Tottenham

Reports from France often tended to follow immediately after a match he didn't play in regarding a summer exit from Tottenham, due to his relationship with the Spurs boss.

His rapport with the 57-year-old certainly wasn't perfect but over the past few months he has worked extremely hard to give Mourinho exactly what he wants.

Now one of the first names on the teamsheet at Spurs, Sunday's 3-1 win over Sheffield United highlighted just how good a player Ndombele is and why the club were so keen to splash out big money on him 18 months ago.

The 24-year-old was superb in South Yorkshire and he quite rightfully dominated the headlines after the victory following his outrageous lob over Aaron Ramsdale.

Linking up well with Steven Bergwijn outside the box, the powerful midfielder then lifted the ball over the goalkeeper with the outside of his foot from the tightest of angles.

It was quite simply sublime.

A nightmare for opponents as he can turn two players at once with his power and close control, his passing is stunning at times, notably the one he made to Serge Aurier with the outside of his boot in the first half.

However, there was one aspect of his game that perhaps went unnoticed that would've gone down so well with Mourinho.

Seen as a bit of a luxury player in his first season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium due to his inability to last games but turn on the magic every now and then, Ndombele actually completed his first 90 minutes in the Premier League since the 2-2 draw away at Norwich City in December 2019.

In his time on the pitch at Bramall Lane the Frenchman actually covered more distance than any other Spurs player after recording 10.94km in his 90 minutes.

Heavily criticised in the past for his performances for the team, nobody can complain about the effort the ex-Lyon man is now putting in for Tottenham week in, week out.

Waxing lyrical about his player after the game, Mourinho hailed his performance as "magnificent" and opened up on his incredible turnaround in the capital after many expected him to move on in the summer.

"I coach for so many years, had so many players and I have enough experience to say and to feel that when a player is not playing very well, it's his responsibility, and when a play turns things around and brings his performance level to a very high level, it's also his responsibility," explained Mourinho.

"It's a great example that with me the door is always open. The door of the team is always open, and when a player is not playing he has to try to understand why and he has to try to understand how can he walk through that door. He understood, he understood.

"The goal is amazing, but I don't care about the goal, I care about the performance and the performance was magnificent and I'm really pleased that he's come to this level. He's playing very, very well."

Playing a pivotal role in Tottenham's good start to the season so far, the fact he is now in a position to last the full 90 minutes on a regular basis suggests that there is still so much more to come from him.

Catching the eye so far with his outstanding displays, the very best may be about to come from Ndombele.
