The unlikely Wales player who now has the best win record of any Welshman in history

He may not even be aware of it amid preparations for this weekend’s Rugby World Cup semi-final against South Africa, but Dillon Lewis is the holder of a remarkable record.

The youngster boasts the highest win percentage of any Wales player who has played 20 or more times for his country.

He has triumphed 18 times in the score of appearances he has made on the Test stage, meaning he has a win rate of 90 percent.

It puts him above any number of all-time greats, including Swansea’s legendary Billy Trew, who has remained unchallenged at the top of the chart for many years.

The centre considered by many contemporaries to be a rugby genius featured in Wales’ first two Grand Slams in 1908 and 1909 and also captained his country. At his funeral, people lined the streets to pay their respects.

So Lewis is in exalted company.

He has started only five of those 20 games, but, still, replacements are part of the game and he has played his part in the success Wales have enjoyed in recent years.

The prop with a penchant for turnovers made his Test debut in the encounter with Tonga at Eden Park in 2017.

The only losses the 23-year-old has endured with Wales since then came against England at Twickenham and Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Rugby World Cup warm-up games this summer.

Others members of Warren Gatland’s squad also feature high on the list.

Owen Watkin is in third position, with 17 victories from his 20 Test outings for an 85 percent win figure, while Hadleigh Parkes is sixth, having walked off a winner 19 times in 23 Tests for an 82.60 percentage.

The only players in the top 20 from Welsh rugby’s 1970s golden era are Mervyn Davies in 17th spot (73.68 percent) and Phil Bennett (72.41 percent) three places below.
