The underwhelming Cardiff City player ratings as attack draws a blank against Sheffield Wednesday

Cardiff City fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday as the Bluebirds got their new Championship campaign off to a start on Saturday.

Here's how each of Neil Harris' men rated.

Alex Smithies 6

Made a couple of important interventions in the first half. Could perhaps have done better with the second goal.

Jordi Osei-Tutu 5

Broke well down the right-hand side when given the chance, just lacked a little bit of quality with the final ball. Lost his man for the second goal.

Sean Morrison 6

Affected the game high up the pitch by winning a number of first balls. Made a couple of important interventions late on.

Curtis Nelson 5

Defensively fairly sound but once again gave away possession with some poor distribution.

Joe Bennett 6

A solid enough outing from the left back. No frills and sent in a couple of dangerous crosses.

Will Vaulks 5

Unusually erratic with his passing at times, putting City defenders under pressure once or twice.

Leandro Bacuna 5

A terribly misplaced pass gave Wednesday the opening for the first goal. Was harassed by the packed Owls midfield.

Joe Ralls 5

Found space on a number of occasions but just could not find that killer pass when it was needed the most. Subbed before the hour.

Sheyi Ojo 6

Looked bright and lively when he was given the chance to run at the defence. Dragged one decent chance wide from close range. Not a bad debut.

Junior Hoilett 5

Just not his afternoon. Really struggled to get past his man and we saw very little of his trademark crosses. Hooked before the hour.

Kieffer Moore 6

Actually caused the Owls defence a bit of bother when the ball was knocked up to him. Narrowly missed a header just before half time.

Subs

Robert Glatzel (on for Ralls 58) 5

Did nothing to really affect the game when he came on.

Josh Murphy (on for Hoilett 58) 5

Made one break down the right after his introduction but pretty quiet, all told.

Lee Tomlin (on for Ojo 64) 5

Shifted out on to the left, where he couldn't really have the impact he would have liked.
