The underpass that's hoped to save lives at one of Wales' most popular beauty spots

An underpass on a busy road has been opened to keep the walkers and tourists flocking to the Brecon Beacons safe.

The tunnel stretches under the A470 - the main route to major beauty spots like Pen y Fan and Corn Du - near Storey Arms.

It will allow safe crossing from one side of the road to the other, rather than people "risking their lives" crossing the busy carriageway.

Wooden fencing and gates have been added at either end of the underpass so sheep can "no longer shelter in the underpass and create muck," according to Brecon Beacons National Park wardens.

The area, popular with walkers, has been heaving since lockdown eased with people desperate for their fix of fresh air after months inside or within five miles of their homes.

The Brecon Beacons officially opened to the public again on July 6 after car parks and footpaths were closed in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Since then, there have been some chaotic scenes with cars jammed on grass verges at the side of the A470 at weekends as thousands flock to climb Pen y Fan.

It is hoped the move will save lives and stop people making risky crossings of the A470 (Brecon Beacons National Park)

People who use the car parks or get off the bus in or near to Storey Arms are being asked to use the underpass to travel "free of sheep faeces", to the other side of the road.

A statement released by Brecon Beacons National Park on social media said: "Wardens make the underpass near Storey Arms fit for walkers so that they can cross the busy A470 safely.

"These gates, installed by our Wardens now mean that sheep will no longer shelter in the underpass and create muck. No more will walkers, wishing to climb Corn Du and Pen y Fan, have to risk their lives crossing the A470 near Storey Arms.

"If you park, or get off the bus, opposite Storey Arms you are now encouraged to walk a short distance and drop down through a clean underpass, free of sheep faeces, to the other side of the valley."
