The unbelievable note left on a police car after detectives spent hours supporting a grieving family

A policeman has tweeted about his experience when he stopped at Tesco to buy his lunch after supporting a grieving family.

The officer was devastated when he found a nasty note on his windscreen.

He says he spent seven hours with the family of a baby who died suddenly and decided to stop for something to eat.

When the officer had returned to his patrol car he said he found a handwritten note saying "£100 fine for shopping on duty".

The tweet written by the officer known as @NorthWestCop reads: "Just left Tesco. Handwritten note on the windscreen of my patrol car. '£100 fine for shopping on duty'. If only I could tell the person who wrote it that I have just spent the last 7 hours at the sudden death of a baby. I'd bought a sandwich. We're not robots. #BeKind #WoundUp"

His post has had 8.1K retweets and 62.9K likes. It also gained lots of comments from people across the country stating their anger at the person who wrote the note.

A post from Mark Hauser said: "People think duty means no food no toilet time and no diverting!!!"

In a follow-up tweet @NorthWestCop thanked everyone for their support, telling them he was blown away by the response.
