- Commuter trains in England and Wales are experiencing significant overcrowding, with one in four London passengers forced to stand during peak hours.
- New data from the Department for Transport reveals that some services, particularly those through Euston and St Pancras International, often operate at over 170 per cent capacity.
- The most overcrowded service identified was a Thameslink morning rush-hour train from Bedford to Three Bridges, reaching 176 per cent capacity.
- Despite these pinch points, the DfT states that 98.9 per cent of passengers typically travel on non-overcrowded services, with average capacity across all services being 29 per cent.
- The DfT is working to improve capacity through measures such as adding carriages, boosting train capacity, introducing timetable changes, and plans for Great British Railways to create a more joined-up service.
