The UK's McDonald's capital has been revealed - where does Manchester rank?

It probably goes without saying that McDonald's is a staple and constant figure on the high street.

But it seems that Manchester is one of the top cities across the UK where you are most likely to stumble across the fast-food chain.

Whether that be driving down to your nearest petrol station or stumbling your way through the golden arches whilst out in the city.

A new study used the company's branch locator to pinpoint the location of all 1,296 McDonald's in the UK.

It then used the most recent population figures published by the Office for National Statistics to work out which cities have the most
- and fewest - McDonald's per head.

And it turns out the people of Manchester are big fans of a Big Mac or Happy Meal.

McDonald's Happy Meals have changed and it's bad news for some parents

The city has a total of 19 McDonalds, or one for every 28,490 people who live there.

Only three other cities - led by Newport, with one for every 21,354 residents, and Lincoln with one for every 24,346 - are better served.

Preston comes next, followed by Manchester while Liverpool, Stoke and Glasgow also make the top 10.

However, sitting at the bottom of the list is St Albans with just one branch serving a population of 147,025.

The Hertfordshire city is followed by Bath, Oxford, Bristol and Brighton and Hove for having the least amount of McDonald's.

Technically, central London - consisting of Westminster and the City of London - has the most McDonald's per head.

It has been excluded from the analysis, however, as far more people work there than live there.

When towns and rural local authorities are included, Watford in Hertfordshire emerges as even more McDonald's-mad than Newport.

Watford has five McDonald's serving 96,577 residents - or one for every 19,315 people.
