The UK's cheapest supermarket revealed based on a basket of 20 essential items

When it comes to our supermarket shop, we are always looking at ways to save money.

And now the cheapest supermarket in the UK has been revealed following a new price comparison survey.

Aldi was named the UK’s cheapest supermarket in April, beating Lidl by just 12p and competition from all of the Big Four.

A monthly price comparison looked at the prices of 20 essential items – including apples, eggs and Hovis bread to uncover the cheapest supermarket over the 30-day period.

The Which? report found a trolley of 20 essential items would have cost shoppers £22.64 at Aldi compared to £30.89 at Waitrose. That’s a £8.25 increase between the two supermarkets.

Asda, meanwhile, was the cheapest of the Big Four grocers at £24.95, reports The Mirror.

The comparison looked at the prices of own-label eggs and raspberries as well as branded products such as Chicago Town pizzas, to see how the UK’s food chains compared.

It said branded tea had the biggest contrast with a £1.22 difference between Aldi and Waitrose.

Own-label large free-range eggs had a difference of £1.15.

The grocer also looked at a basket of 82 goods, comparing a bigger range of branded goods.

Aldi and Lidl were not included in this comparison due to the number of branded goods compared.

It found Asda to be the cheapest supermarket for the fifteenth month running at for £152.67 for a full trolley of products.

Asda charged shoppers £20.75 less than the most expensive supermarket, Waitrose.

Sainsbury’s was second-cheapest at £159.54, while Ocado was second-priciest at £170.67.

The shopping list combined branded groceries, such as Cadbury Dairy Milk and Heinz baked beans, with own-label products like onions, chicken drumsticks and milk.
