The UK's cheapest supermarket revealed as Aldi and Lidl dethroned by major chain

Budget supermarket chains Aldi and Lidl have been unseated as the UK's cheapest supermarkets by Tesco, according to a recent price comparison.

The latest monthly survey of food prices from WalesOnline has found that Tesco Clubcard shoppers are getting cheaper prices than they currently would at any other of the major supermarkets across the country.

It found that Tesco was the cheapest overall for the time ever with a total that came to £10.78 - just narrowly beating Lidl which was 1p more expensive at £10.79. Tesco was also 25p cheaper than Asda, which came in third with a total of £11.03.

As UK households battle higher prices at the supermarket due to soaring grocery inflation rates, knowing where to get in the weekly shopping for less can certainly help those who are struggling at the moment.

Looking at a shopping list of seven basic items - milk, bread, eggs, cheese, spaghetti, apples and breakfast cereal - the comparison revealed that prices had risen in all of the main supermarkets between December 2022 and January 2023.

Interestingly, Aldi slid down to fourth place in the comparison, with a total of £11.06, making it 28p more expensive than Tesco where you can get a cheap cheese deal with your Clubcard.

For the first time ever, the price comparison also found that all of the supermarkets' bills were over £10. Another shortage of eggs was reported, with restrictions on the amount you could buy still in place.

It comes just after consumer champion group Which? named Aldi as the cheapest supermarket for 2022, after it was found to be offering the cheapest prices for seven out of the 12 months of the year.

Discounted rival Lidl was also offering households the cheapest prices for five months out of the year. The same study found that Tesco was the cheapest out of the "Big Four" supermarkets.

The group also found that prices of grocery staples, such as milk, bread and butter, had also risen up to 29%, 26% and 22% respectively, across all supermarket chains.

Here is the shopping bill for each supermarket in January, as reported by WalesOnline.
