The UK local authorities with the highest coronavirus infection rates and how Wales compares

Local authorities in England and Scotland are facing rapidly spreading battles with Covid-19 with infection rates approaching those seen at the peak of the second wave.

The latest data from the UK government's coronavirus.data.gov.uk website shows that one local authority in England has an infection rates nearly 20 times greater than the worst-hit part of Wales.

Of the UK's four devolved nations however, Scotland has the highest infection rate with 66.9 cases for every 100,000 people in the last week, compared to 33.7 in England, 25.9 in Northern Ireland and just 8.8 in Wales.

Yesterday Wales saw a ninth consecutive day of no deaths from Covid-19. Additionally, only a further two people were admitted to hospital with the virus.

When looking at the areas with the fewest Covid-19 cases, Wales also falls on the lower end of the scale, with the Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly having some of the lowest infection rates in the United Kingdom.

Wales' highest infection rate currently remains in Conwy, where the infection rate is 23 per 100,000 population.

This peak is due to a cluster of cases of the Indian variant of concern in Llandudno Junction, Llandudno and Penrhyn Bay areas.

Wales' rolling total of positive cases since the start of the pandemic now stands at 212,999.
