The ugliest animal on Earth may be humanity's best hope for living longer — here's the science

Naked mole rats spend most of their lives underground, have wrinkled skin, barely any hair, and look very different from most mammals people are used to seeing. But behind their unusual appearance is a biology that has fascinated aging researchers for years.

These rodents can live for decades, rarely develop cancer, and seem unusually resistant to many diseases commonly linked to aging, as per a report. Now, scientists believe some of those natural defenses could eventually help researchers better understand how to improve health later in life.

Why Naked Mole Rats Live So Much Longer Than Other Rodents

Naked mole rats are about the size of mice, but their lifespan is extraordinary for small rodents. Researchers say they can live up to 41 years, nearly ten times longer than similarly sized rodents, as per a Science Daily report.

Scientists have also observed that naked mole rats appear protected from several conditions that commonly affect aging mammals, including cancer, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegeneration.

Researchers at the University of Rochester have spent years studying why these animals remain so resilient as they grow older.

The Protective Molecule Scientists Believe Makes Naked Mole Rats Unique

One major focus of the research has been high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, also known as HMW-HA.

According to researchers, naked mole rats carry around ten times more HMW-HA than mice and humans. Earlier studies showed that removing HMW-HA from naked mole rat cells made those cells more likely to form tumors, as per the Science Daily report.

That discovery raised an important question for scientists: could the same protective mechanism work in another mammal?

How Researchers Used a Naked Mole Rat Gene in Mice

In a 2023 study published in Nature, researchers transferred the naked mole rat version of the hyaluronan synthase 2 gene into mice. This gene helps produce HMW-HA.

The modified mice developed higher levels of hyaluronan in several tissues and showed stronger resistance to spontaneous tumors and chemically induced skin cancer.

Researchers also found that the mice appeared healthier overall compared with ordinary mice.

The Mice Lived Longer and Showed Less Inflammation

The genetically modified mice experienced less inflammation in multiple tissues as they aged and maintained better gut health.

Researchers believe the reduced inflammation is especially important because chronic inflammation is considered one of the key biological features of aging.

The mice also lived longer, with scientists reporting about a 4.4 percent increase in median lifespan.

While the lifespan increase was modest, researchers described the study as an important proof that a longevity mechanism from one mammal could improve health in another species.

Scientists Believe Naked Mole Rats May Offer New Clues for Human Health

Researchers say the study supports the idea that biological defenses found in long-lived animals may eventually help scientists develop new approaches for healthier aging.

According to the research team, future efforts may focus on slowing the breakdown of HMW-HA or increasing its production in the body.

Researchers also said they are already testing molecules that slow hyaluronan degradation in pre-clinical trials.
