The UEFA Women's Champions League has changed - here's what Man City can expect

After finishing in second place in the FA's Women Super League, Manchester City will compete in the UEFA Women's Champions League for the sixth consecutive time.

City crashed out of the quarter finals last season to eventual champions Barcelona.

The club's best finish in the competition has been the semi-finals having reached that stage of the tournament twice (2016/17 and 2017/18) - they lost to Lyon both times.

Next season will see a new format being introduced. Here are all the details ahead of City 's campaign.

The new changes

In the past UEFA Women's Champions League had a knock-out round in the round of 16. But the new format will introduce a group-stage for the first time.

The 2021/22 season will see a 16-team group stage with the top two from four groups qualifying to the quarter finals.

For the first time next season England alongside six of the other top coefficient ranking associations will have three teams enter the competition which will see Chelsea and Manchester City joined by Arsenal next season.

There will be two qualifying rounds prior to the 16-team group-stage.

Round one will be a mini-tournament format with semi-finals, third place match and finals.

Meanwhile round two will have home and away legs to determine which teams make it to the group-stages of the competition.

Just like in the men's game, the away goal has been wiped out, so if the scores are level in the tie after 90 minutes teams will have to play extra time and potentially penalties to determine the winner of the tie.

City will enter the 2021/22 competition in round two qualifying.

They will be drawn against the winners of five group stage winners from round one of qualifying.
