The UEFA rule change which will affect Manchester United and Man City in Europe next season

A change in UEFA regulations could come as a big boost to Manchester United and Man City next season when they compete in European competiion.

The new rule will see an expanded substitutes bench for games in the Champions League and Europa League , from the current seven subs clubs can name being increased to 12.

The rule will first be enforced in this year's Champions League final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool on June 1 and will also be used in the Europa League final between Chelsea and Arsenal in the following week.

UEFA have also confirmed a fourth substitution is available to managers should any tie ever need to go through to extra time, on top of the standard limit of three changes.

The new rule will come as a welcomed boost for both City and United as they prepare for their Champions League and Europa League, respectively, campaigns for next season.

The five additional substitutes will allow for teams to have more options at their disposal during a game and is also a golden opportunity to give young players the experience of being involved in high-profile games and potentially even get a chance on the pitch.

The Premier League, on the other hand, is expected to keep their rule the same and only allow seven players on the bench on a match day.
