John Stones should kickstart his career and 'jump on that train' at Newcastle United.
That's the view of pundit and Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips, who believes the two-time Premier League winner needs to leave Manchester City to revive his career.
The England international arrived at the Etihad Stadium in 2016 for a fee rising to £50m - making the former Everton centre-back the second most expensive defender in the world at that time.
Stones has lifted two Premier League titles and featured for the Three Lions at the 2018 World Cup, but has struggled for a starting spot under Pep Guardiola so far this campaign.
The 26-year-old has made just 12 Premier League appearances, with the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss regularly selecting Aymeric Laporte, Fernandinho and Nicolas Otamendi ahead of him.
A recent Telegraph report named Stones as a potential target for the Magpies if Rafa Benitez returns to St James' Park following a takeover.
Phillips believes a "fresh start" would benefit the centre-back, and reckons a move to Tyneside could be just what the defender needs to reinvigorate his career.
The pundit told Football Insider: “I think John Stones should get out of Manchester City.
“It has not quite worked out for John. He came for big money as a young lad and there was a lot of pressure.
“I like him, he is a good player and a fresh start somewhere else would do him the world of good.
“If he could jump on that train at Newcastle – who knows where it could be heading.
“He has won stuff at Manchester City but it might be that time for him to leave. I am not sure that Pep Guardiola trusts him so it might be best for all parties.”
