The two things that need to happen this season for Maurizio Sarri to lose his job at Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri still faces an uncertain future as the manager of Chelsea as rumours continue to swirl over how long he will last in his post.

The writing looked on the wall in February before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, where a defeat anywhere near the 6-0 thrashing a couple of weeks before that would have spelt the end for the Italian after just seven months in the job.

He managed to save himself by taking them to penalties before beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Stamford Bridge three days after to put Chelsea right back in contention for the top four.

But since then the Blues have struggled again - they've qualified for the Europa League quarter finals but needed a last minute Eden Hazard goal to get a point against Wolves at the Bridge before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Everton in the last game before the international break.

It means the pressure is once again back on Sarri, according to the Sun, there are two things that need to happen if Sarri is to get the sack before the season ends.

One of those is crashing out of the Europa League, where Chelsea face Slavia Prague in the quarter finals with a potential semi final tie against Benfica or Eintracht Frankfurt.

The other is falling away in the race for the top four - at the moment the Blues are are three points behind Arsenal in fourth spot but have to travel to Liverpool and Manchester United before the end of the season.

Chelsea want a return to the Champions League next season and have two potential routes to get there, one is by winning the Europa League in Baku in May and the other is by finishing in the top four.

Should they fail to do it via either route, it looks like Roman Abramovich could cut his losses with Sarri after only just one season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
