The two Swansea communities with the worst Covid case rates anywhere in Wales

Two communities in Swansea have the highest Covid case rate in all of Wales, and higher than any English county.

The latest seven-day infection rate across Wales has risen to its highest figure than at any stage of the pandemic, but some communities have been affected worse than others.

The latest figures, which cover the time frame of December 25 to 31 show the number of new confirmed cases of Covid-19 and the Covid-19 rate for different areas of Swansea.

A breakdown of each area of Wales, produced by Public Health Wales, shows that Dunvant and Upper Killay currently has the highest case rate of anywhere, with 3,987.2 cases per 100,000 population. The closest to this are Glyn-coch & Ynys-y-bwl in Rhondda Cynon Taff with a rate of 3,844.6 and Tredegar & Georgetown in Blaenau Gwent with a rate of 3,423.9

Dunvant & Upper Killay' s rate is way higher than the average across Wales of 1,986.5 cases per 100,000 and than any individual local authority area in England - although there could be communities within those areas that have higher rates.

Loughor is the area of Swansea with the highest number of cases right now - currently 276.

Councillor Paxton Hood-Williams, who represents the Upper Killay area, said the figures were a reminder that the pandemic was far from over.

He said: "No area wants to have the highest rate of infection, and unfortunately that is the case as far as Upper Killay is concerned. Dunvant is larger than Upper Killay which will have had an impact as to why the cases for Upper Killay are so high.

"These high figures show us that the pandemic is still increasing and people still need to be taking the necessary care and minimize the risk of passing the virus on to other people."

One local pub worker, who asked not to be named said the rising Covid rates had meant this had been one of the quietest festive seasons they'd had.

They said: "Well, we have been quiet all over Christmas and will be quiet all through January. People are scared to come out which means the pub is empty or nearly empty a lot of the time. I would rather be fully closed than open with no customers."

These new figures come at the same time as the announcement by the Welsh Government that people who have had a positive lateral flow test result will no longer need a confirmatory PCR test as long as they are asymptomatic.
