The two reasons why £40m Wilfried Zaha to Tottenham transfer is nonsense

A massive summer lies ahead for Tottenham Hotspur.

As well as being in need to recruit a new head coach, a search that is heading in the right direction, and sort out Harry Kane's future, Spurs also need to strengthen the squad in a variety of areas in an attempt to turn themselves back into top four contenders next term.

Despite securing an impressive 4-2 win over Leicester City on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday afternoon, it was not enough to earn Spurs a place in the UEFA Europa League next season, with West Ham United claiming sixth spot.

Instead, Spurs have a place in the Europa Conference League, meaning their hopes of attracting specific players could be dashed, as other suitors may be able to offer the Champions League or Europa League.

But regardless of that, Spurs are going to have to strengthen their armoury, with several positions in need of bolstering, especially at centre-back and up front, particularly if Kane leaves the club.

However, a report by Goal claims that Spurs are set to rival Everton in the race to sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, who has recently declared his desire to test himself for a top club once again.

Last week, talking to The Face, as quoted by the Express, Zaha said: "I feel like I can have another shot at the top teams, because my dream is to win things.

"I'm good enough to go out there and compete with the best.

"If the opportunity came, I wouldn't turn it down, because I feel like I deserve it. It's so I can show my kids: 'This is what daddy won'."

The report by Goal claims that both Everton and Tottenham are keen on landing Zaha, who could be available for £40million.

However, that seems somewhat unlikely when taking into account the number of wingers Spurs already have on their books. Erik Lamela, Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min are all considered as wide players, whilst Gareth Bale's future at the club remains unclear.

As well as being well stocked in the wide areas, Spurs have also made signing a centre-back their top priority, football.london understands, with significant quality needing to be added to the back-line. The

Of course, the scenario could change if the likes of Lamela and Moura go, but the likelihood of them both sealing summer exits is slim. The club also need to sell before they buy this summer due to finances at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium being tight.

While £40m for Zaha could be seen as a good buy, given that he is one of the Premier League's most exciting and tricky wingers, Spurs could use £40m on bolstering other areas that are of greater need of improvement.
