The two reasons Frank Lampard is getting the best out of Willian amid Chelsea contract dispute

Willian's contract negotiations with Chelsea have gone on for some time, now.

The 31-year-old's long-term future has been up in the air since the start of the season, and there hasn't be a resolution yet.

The Brazil international has already stated that it would be difficult for the new contract to be signed, with the two sides at an impasse.

Willian is currently after a three-year deal, while the Blues are only willing to hand him a two-year contract to stay with the club.

However, with the performances that the winger is currently putting in this season, it is something which could twist the arm of the club.

After the long break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Willian signed a short-term contract extension to see out the 2019/20 campaign with the Blues.

Since the restart of football, Willian has made six appearances and scored four times, providing another three assists to go with it.

In the massive 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace, the winger provided another two assists to Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic, inspiring the three points.

"Yes, he was extremely influential," Lampard said. "I mean he and Christian are a threat for us at the minute.

"When you think of Willian and his situation, the impact he is having in all the games at the minute with his speed and how he controls the ball and his quality which we all see in every game, I am so pleased with him.

"He has been brilliant for us with both of those things and Willian deserves huge credit."

For a player who might have his eye off the ball amid his contract dispute, Willian is playing like a man with anything but pure concentration.

There could be a couple of reasons for that.

The first being he is trying to prove to Chelsea that he deserves the longer-term deal he is yet being given.

The other is a call out to other clubs around the Premier League that he certainly still has the skills to play at the very top level.

For Lampard, all he will care about is the fact that Willian is putting in some of his best performances at the most crucial time of the season.

It would be kind of ironic if the Brazilian fires Chelsea to the Champions League, denying those clubs who are after him in Manchester United, Arsenal and Spurs top flight European football.

It says a lot about Willian's mentality that the contract situation has been completely put to one side and it is only his ability which is coming to the fore.

The Brazilian has taken on a real leadership role in Lampard's team and has become crucial in dragging the Blues through the mire and almost secured a top four finish.

While the contract situation is still an ongoing one for both sides, Willian continues to be a huge part of Chelsea's attacking prowess.
