The two cut-throat English football sackings that proves no one is safe

It's been a day of surprise sackings down south.

Huddersfield have parted company with manager Danny Cowley while Watford are set to give boss Nigel Pearson the bullet.

Both coaches took over sides in danger of relegation and steered them to safety.

Cowley leaves Huddersfield following 10 months in charge, with his final game a win over second-placed West Brom that all-but secured the club's Championship survival.

Pearson, meanwhile, had not yet secured the Hornets' place in the Premier League.

Watford slipped to a 3-1 defeat to fellow strugglers West Ham on Friday, leaving them just three points above the drop zone.

They face two daunting final fixtures in their bid to retain top-flight status.

First, they host Manchester City before concluding the campaign away at Arsenal.

The dismissals highlight the cut-throat environment in which managers operate in the modern game.

Both men had been considered relative successes given the positions their respective clubs found themselves in when they took over.

It remains to be seen who will be given the task of seeing out the season and beyond.
