The two contract decisions Everton must make as outcasts set to hand Marco Silva wage boost

Everton will expend a large chunk of their wage budget next summer regardless of their transfer activity before the end of the European transfer window.

Leighton Baines, Kevin Mirallas, Cuco Martina, Oumar Niasse and Maarten Stekelenburg are all out of contract in 12 months with Mirallas, Martina and Niasse all available for sale.

Marco Silva could look to potentially extend the deals of experienced full-back Baines as well as reserve goalkeeper Stekelenburg to maintain his squad depth at Goodison Park but it seems likely both will call time on their Everton careers.

Ins & Outs: Everton's summer transfer business

The Blues, however, have left themselves with a considerable backlog of decisions to make over their brightest under-23 stars.

Defender Lewis Gibson, signed from Newcastle United in 2017, is available to talk with European outfits from January with his current deal expiring in 2020.

Morgan Feeney, David Unsworth's regular captain, is also a free agent this summer alongside Nathangelo Markelo, who Everton brought in from Volendam three seasons ago.

Antony Evans, Matthew Foulds, Con Ouzounidis and Manasse Mampala are four more starlets who will be available to leave and Silva, Marcel Brands and Unsworth must now begin to make decisions on their futures.

Everton will be reticent to lose Gibson and Feeney after investing considerable sums towards their development.

Both defenders have been involved in first-team training under Silva and Gibson was a breakout star of pre-season, scoring in the defeat to Mainz.

Evans and Foulds may look to find opportunities elsewhere and boyhood Blue Feeney will have a decision to make on his own future.

Everton's pursuit of a centre-back was no secret during the summer and should they re-enter the market for a defender next time around, he would be pushed further down the pecking order.

A decision is likely to be made before January to ensure the club avoid the ignominy of losing their brightest prospects on a free transfer but the ball has very much landed in the court of the players, who could decide to leave for pastures new.

But with high-earners such as Niasse and Mirallas edging closer towards the exit, Silva and Brands will have continued their mission of reducing an inflated wage bill while freeing up space for fresh talent at Goodison Park.
