The two areas Mauricio Pochettino must strengthen to get Spurs back into top-four contention

Tottenham's run of qualifying for the Champions League in four successive seasons may well come to an end in May going on their start to the 2019/20 campaign.

A disastrous run of three wins from their opening 12 league fixtures has left them in 14th and a whopping 11 points off the top four.

While there are plenty of points to be won and lost given there are 26 games left to be played, if Mauricio Pochettino's side don't turn the corner very soon they can wave their chances of qualifying for Europe's elite competition goodbye.

Many are hoping that the manager can add to his squad come January to give them a much-needed boost to kick on in the second half of the season and try and push on for the top four.

While some may see attacking midfield as an area to prioritise given Christian Eriksen's poor form and the fact he is likely to leave in the summer, Pascal Chimbonda has outlined two different areas that Spurs should look to strengthen once the transfer window reopens.

“They definitely need to sign one more striker, whether that’s as a direct back-up to Kane or someone to play alongside him if Pochettino decides to change shape,” the Frenchman told Gambling.com.

“If they want to get back up the table and compete for third and fourth place then they need to become less reliant on Kane’s goals.

“They can forget about going for the title – 20 points off the top is far too far off the pace – but if they can bring a striker in and maybe strengthen the defence, then they might be able to claw their way back into top four contention.”

Spurs return to Premier League action this weekend with a vital trip to West Ham, before then facing Bournemouth, Manchester United and Burnley.
