The turn of the spew: the rise of the obligatory vomit scene

Listing movie tropes (‘A dated and alarmist trope’: critics on the modern movie cliches that need to go, 28 October), how could you miss the Obligatory Vomit Scene in which the film-makers prove how real, gritty and brave they are by showing the protagonist throwing up? My only fear is that it’s now been superseded in film and TV by the Obligatory Peeing Scene – once a preserve of male actors, now spreading among female protagonists too (see: I May Destroy You, Rye Lane, and others). Here the woman shows how brave the film-maker is by peeing noisily and/or with the toilet door open.
