The tucked-away pocket of homes that boast jaw-dropping views of Swansea

As the old adage about property goes – it's all about location, location, location.

And while people might want different things from the place they live very few will turn their nose up at the prospect of a stunning view from the place they call home.

Though anyone living in Swansea is lucky enough to have the majestic beauty of the Gower Peninsula virtually on their doorstep for a day out far fewer people get to enjoy a vast panorama of the area with their morning cuppa.

But tucked away among a rabbits' warren of neatly-kept pebbledashed homes in St Thomas lies one of the city's best-kept secrets.

Because for the residents living near the top of Kilvey Hill – which enjoys panoramic views of Swansea city centre, Swansea Docks, Swansea Bay, the Lower Swansea Valley, Bonymaen, Neath and Port Talbot – picturesque views are a daily reality.

This is particularly the case at Granville Road in St Thomas, where people have lived for decades in the same homes in a street where average property prices sit around the £160,000 mark.

And it's no surprise people choose not to move on as you're blown away by the breathtaking views as soon as you step inside the homes towards the top of a steep street which climbs to afford majestic views of the city skyline and the coast.

Tony and Hazel Beaujean bought the land their property sits on for "the price of a second-hand car" 47 years ago.

Mr Beaujean, 69, said: "I was born and bred on Glenroy Avenue and my mother used to come down here and used to visit a lady in a bungalow. She always used to remark how nice it was.

"I had a colleague who built his own house and and it gave me a thought. A rough patch of land came up on Glanville Road and I made a bid and got it 47 years ago. I bought it for the price of a second-hand car.

"I did the labouring on it myself and the rest is history."

Mr and Mrs Beaujean brought up their three sons, Carl, Neil and Andrew, at the home. And Andrew is currently renovating his own house on the same street a few doors down.

"The view you can't buy, everyone says that," Mrs Beaujean, 72, said. "It is very enjoyable and peaceful up here. It's beautiful on a lovely day – people come up here and sit on the hill."

Alan and Elizabeth Lowe have lived next door for the last 48 years.

They managed to acquire the property after the elderly couple who lived there before them decided to move to London.

Mr Lowe, 74, originally of Gwyn Terrace, wanted to live in the area but his wife initially had reservations as she had no idea what it was like at the time.

"Alan wanted to live here and came to see the property without me," Mrs Lowe recalled.

"I had no idea about the superb view. It was wonderful.

"People can't believe the view we've got here. We've seen so much change in Swansea though the years. We've more or less seen the city develop.

"County Hall was not there when we first arrived neither was the Meridian Tower – it's become better.

"We spend most of our time sat out with a pair of binoculars or with a glass of wine or a cup of tea enjoying the views. There's always something going on."

The couple highlighted the Wales Air Show as one of the key dates in the calendar where they enjoy the views the most.

"Friends come over and book their seats," Mrs Lowe said. Mr Lowe added: "On a good day you can see Ilfracombe clearly."

Lily and Jonathan Bidmead have lived at their property for more than 40 years with their son Ceri Bidmead, 30.

Ceri, showing off his back garden, said: "I love living here because it's beautiful.

"I wake up every day and it's perfect every day for me.

"We have barbecues here and it's lovely on sunny days. You can hear the noise from the Liberty Stadium clearly too when the Swans are playing."
