The agent of CSKA Moscow striker Adolfo Gaich, Pablo Caro, has claimed Leeds United tried to sign his client during the transfer window.
The Whites spent over £50million on summer recruits, with Rodrigo Moreno arriving as the club's record signing to bolster the attack.
Diego Llorente also arrived for £17million as Leeds spent more than expected and scoured the European market for excellent value.
At the time of Leeds' reported interest, Gaich was on the books of Argentine club San Lorenzo and attracted suitors across Europe, including, reportedly, Leeds.
According to TyC Sports in his homeland, West Bromwich Albion, Inter Milan, Atalanta and Gent ‘already asked’ about Gaich, with a £12.1million release clause in his contract.
Caro was in the media again speaking about a possible move: “He would like a transfer to Italy, but he is targeted by many clubs,” he told Italian outlet Calciomercato.
“There is a release clause worth €13million, but he could be signed for less than that.”
Gaich eventually moved to CSKA Moscow and Cairo has now revealed Leeds' interest whilst claiming Sheffield United were also in the running after a lack of game time in his early days in Russia.
"Yes, I heard about it. It's true. But we have not yet had specific conversations with Leeds," he told Metaratings.ru.
"Early October, right before the transfer window closed, 3 European clubs were ready to take Gaich, as he doesn’t get enough playing time in Russia.
"These are “Besiktas”, “Feyenoord” and “Sheffield United”. They were ready to pay for him as he is a top striker.
"It is funny that “Feyenoord” wanted to strengthen with Gaich before the Europa League, and now they are playing with CSKA in the same group."
