The truth about Xavier Amaechi's Arsenal future amid talk of summer transfer

A number of Arsenal's talented youngsters were handed a chance to impress head coach Unai Emery on tour in America.

Eddie Nketiah staked his claim for more first-team chances with three goals as well as an assist, summer Gabriel Martinelli also helped himself to a goal as did Bukayo Saka, James Olayinka and Joe Willock.

Emery also afforded minutes to the returning Reiss Nelson as well as Dominic Thompson, Zech Medley and Robbie Burton.

However, one youngster who was not even picked for the tour was Xavier Amaechi.

Football.london reported earlier in the summer that the were facing up to the increasingly likely prospect that he will not sign a new contract after Emery snubbed the winger from his Europa League final bench.

That coupled with the teenager's absence from the tour as well as not featuring in the pre-season win over Barnet on Wednesday evening prompted talk of an imminent move to Germany.

But, football.london understands those reports are wide of the mark.

Arsenal correspondent James Benge has said: "I’m told there has not been any recent progress towards Xavier Amaechi leaving Arsenal. That remains the most likely scenario though no guarantee it’ll be this summer as club would want a significant fee for a talented youngster.

"Amaechi of interest to German and Spanish clubs."

The promotion of Freddie Ljungberg to one of Emery's assistant first-team coaches appeared at the time to be beneficial for Amaechi as the two worked together last season.

The Swede showed faith in the winger who was out of action for nearly three months at the beginning of last season, restoring highly-rated youngster to his team as soon as he was fully fit and has spoken highly of the talent in interviews.

"He will be a very, very good player but he needs to work because he’s missed a few months of football unfortunately.

"We’re happy we’ve got a winger back, but as well for individual development and what we’re trying to do here.

"Of course it’s great to get someone back that can play in that wing position and he’s a great talent, so I was just sad for him that he was injured for so long."

But it would appear that another team will benefit from Amaechi's great talent.
