The truth about the rumour all alcohol sales are going to be banned in Wales

Rumours that alcohol sales are being to be banned in Wales from December 17 have been dismissed by the Welsh Government.

People have been saying that ministers are considering banning the sale in supermarkets and off licences as part of new restrictions before Christmas.

But a spokesman for the Welsh Government said: "There is absolutely no truth in this."

From last Friday (December 4), hospitality businesses in Wales – such as pubs, cafes, restaurants, sports clubs must not sell alcohol for consumption on the premises, and have to close from 6pm. Take-away services can be provided, including the sale of alcohol until 10pm.

The current rules from the Welsh Government are that off-licences, including supermarkets, will have to stop selling alcohol at 10pm. This also applies to click and collect and deliveries of alcohol, such as through a home delivery app.

Licensed premises operating take-away services and off-licences cannot begin to sell alcohol again until 6am the next day.

Dr Frank Atherton told the latest Welsh Government briefing that the Welsh Cabinet would be meeting this week to look at what he described as "other options" to try and get the virus under control.

But a complete ban on the sale of alcohol is not likely to be one of the topics under discussion.

Ministers are constantly monitoring the situation as the number of cases in Wales continue to soar.

The overall rate for Wales rose again on Wednesday with now almost 350 cases per 100,000, up from 326.8 on Tuesday. You can see the infection rates in your area here.
