The truth about Kieran Tierney's injury amid speculation Arsenal star has suffered a setback

Speculation is rampant that Kieran Tierney could have suffered a setback in his recovery from a long-term hip injury with rumours the Arsenal defender is set to withdraw from the Scotland squad.

Tierney was not part of the travelling party for Arsenal's 1-1 draw at Manchester United having played 75 minutes of an EFL Cup win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

That has led to claims that Tierney's troubling hip injury, which along with groin issues has been plaguing him since April, had flared up again. However football.london understands that the 22-year-old is considered available for selection for Thursday's Europa League game against Standard Liege.

It is not necessarily guaranteed that Tierney will start, particularly with a game against Bournemouth to follow on Sunday. Hector Bellerin is set to feature from the off against Liege.

Arsenal had always intended to leave Tierney behind when they travelled to Old Trafford and he is still working on his rehabilitation with the Gunners medical staff. As such it is expected he will not be part of Steve Clarke's squad for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Russia and San Marino.

Tierney would not be the first Gunners player to miss international duty as part of his recovery work. Arsenal and Ivory Coast medical staff agreed that Nicolas Pepe would not join his national team last month as he worked on his fitness following his £72million move from Lille.
