The true worth of Arsenal's summer signings revealed as Edu pulls off £54.9m masterstroke

Arsenal's summer spending was completed with the deadline day arrival of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.

After talks throughout the summer, the Gunners eventually agreed to activate the Ghana midfielder's £45million release clause on Monday.

Mikel Arteta was desperate to add a new central midfielder before the transfer deadline with Partey the number one target throughout the window.

The midfielder was Arsenal's sixth major signing of the window in total, with Arteta strengthening his squad in several key areas.

Why Arsenal waited so long to pay Thomas Partey's release clause

Willian arrived on a free transfer early in the window, after his contract at Chelsea expired at the end of last season, whilst centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes was signed from Lille for £23.4million to bolster Arsenal's backline.

Dani Ceballos re-signed on another season-long loan deal from Real Madrid, whilst Pablo Mari and Cedric both signed permanent deals after initially joining on loans in January.

The fee for Mari was an initial £7.2million, whilst Cedric was on a free.

Goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson was snapped up from French club Dijon after Emiliano Martinez was sold to Aston Villa in a deal that could reach £20million with add-ons.

Using figures on Transfermarkt, Arsenal's spent £77.4million in the summer window in total.

The website, however, calculates that the true total market value of the arrivals is £132.3million, given the players' ages, ability and sell-on value.

This provides a net positive of £54.9million in terms of signings overall, with technical director Edu and CEO Vinai Venkatesham playing a key role in Arsenal's summer business.
