The true impact of Alexandre Lacazette's new role for Arsenal under Mikel Arteta against Man Utd

Alexandre Lacazette was one of the stand out players for Arsenal in Mikel Arteta's first victory as head coach of the Gunners against Manchester United.

His hard work pressing from the front put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's defenders under stress while David De Gea was forced into making an error that almost gifted the home team a third goal at the Emirates Stadium in their 2-0 win.

It was a performance that created space for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe to play off the Frenchman with the summer signing scoring the opener after only eight minutes.

According to StatsBomb, Lacazette was the top player in the 21st round of Premier League fixtures for defensive work in the opposition's own half.

Mesut Ozil also ranked high for his efforts closing opponents down as Arsenal's attacking midfielder.

The German also showed his quality when in possession, creating plenty of chances with his passes to find runners in the final third.

No players made more 'counterpressures' than Lacazette in the study, which covers actions to close down an opponents after possession is loss, pressing the other team while trying to counter-attack.

He was also one of the most prolific performers for 'pressures', or actions to close down opponents to try and win possession of the ball and cause them to make mistakes or misplace a pass.

The striker also made more 'defensive actions' than Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden.

Lacazette was forced off in the second half with cramp after running down the United defence for 82 minutes.

In the aftermath of the game, Arsenal centre-backs David Luiz and Sokratis Papastathopoulos spoke about the need for the players to improve their fitness levels to cope with Arteta's demands.

The Gunners will need to get used to the physical demands of the their new head coach and the increase in intensity his methods require.

However, against United, Lacazette was one of the players to sum up this change in attitude and approach.
