The treasured 'Busby Babes' autograph book that lay hidden away in a loft for years

It would have been a prized possession for any young Manchester United fan.

On Christmas morning 1957, young Alan Fishwick unwrapped an autograph book filled with the signatures of his sporting heroes, the Busby Babes.

His mum had asked a friend who worked the turnstiles at Old Trafford for help, and he had managed to get the book signed by United's first team.

The youngster, then aged nine, was absolutely thrilled with the priceless gift.

He never could have imagined then how incredibly poignant it would soon become.

Just six weeks later, on February 6, 1958, the club would be devastated by the Munich Air Disaster.

Eight United players, Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Billy Whelan were among the 23 passengers who lost their lives as a result of the crash, as the team returned from a European cup tie.

Other players and manager Sir Matt Busby were severely injured.

Alan, whose dad was a ball boy at Old Trafford in the 1930s, had been brought up a Red and still vividly remembers the impact the tragedy had on the city and beyond.

He said: "I remember it very well. I will never forget seeing the coffins coming back. I remember that atmosphere in Manchester after the crash."

Alan held on to the book and would occasionally take it out in the hope of adding the names of even more sporting legends.

During a visit to Blackpool a few years later, he called into a shop run by England footballer Stanley Mortensen, who signed his name.

But while he was there, Sir Stanley Matthews, who at that time was playing for Blackpool, and boxer Brian London happened to walk in - and also added their names.

Alan, who now lives in Bolton, eventually grew up and left home, somehow managing to lose track of his book in the process.

Over the years he often wondered what had happened to it, until August this year, when the mystery was finally solved when it was unearthed among a collection of family documents.

Alan said: "I was made up with the book.

"I lost sight of it, and that was it. As time has gone on I had wondered about it.

"My brother had a box of my dad's papers in his loft. I said 'go through it, you might find some PPI'.

"He called me back and said 'I don't know about PPI but I've found your book'".

Now the book is set to go to a new home when it goes under the hammer though Graham Budd Auctions at Sotheby's in London early next month.

The auction takes place on Tuesday, November 5, and the book is expected to reach at least £700 to £800.
