Bruno Fernandes remains a Sporting player after failing to secure a move away from the Portuguese side this summer.
The highly-rated midfielder was tipped to leave Estadio Jose Alvalade with both Spurs and Manchester United heavily linked with him throughout the transfer window.
With both failing to strike a deal for the Portuguese international before the Premier League transfer window slammed shut, reports suggested that the 24-year would in fact complete a big-money move to Real Madrid ahead of the European transfer deadline.
That never materialised and Fernandes now remains with Sporting until January.
Speaking to the club's official website, club president Frederico Varandas revealed that Daniel Levy and Tottenham did submit a €45million offer plus a further €20m in add-ons.
However, he didn't believe the add-ons were achievable and decided to reject the bid from the Lilywhites.
"It was 'impossible' to retain Bruno Fernandes, but we did it," he said. "We prepared for his sale by putting a fair price on his worth, and we had bids, but only a Tottenham one that was €45million plus €20m in objectives - winning the English League and the Champions League.
"Finding these goals difficult, I understood not to accept."
"Bruno Fernandes proved to be not only a great player but a great professional and captain," he added.
"The dignity, example, and responsibility that he always held were exemplary.
"The day I turned down the Tottenham proposal, I came to the academy and talked to him, told him why I declined and why he would stay here until the end of the market and he understood perfectly.
"In addition, he also realised that the value they gave to Sporting CP was not fair."
