The transfer clause in Newcastle's Emil Krafth deal that ended up helping one of his former clubs

A clause in the deal that took Emil Krafth from Amiens to Newcastle has ended up helping one of his former clubs.

United paid around £5million to the French side to secure the signature of the left-back – and that included a significant sell-on clause for his former club Helsingborg.

The cash-strapped Allsvenskan side were able to use the money to snap up Olof Mellberg as their new coach, replacing Henrik Larsson – who resigned after being subject to “verbal abuse” from his own supporters.

Helsingborg have financial issues but the significant sell-on meant that they could appoint Mellberg. “It means we have a little better muscle than we thought we would have. We had intended to use them for other purposes but now we have to use them for this. We have a much better transfer net than we had expected,” chairman Krister Azelius said.

Krafth was delighted that his transfer helped out one of his former clubs. “I don’t know how much money Helsingborg received. But it is fun to be able to help a club that you have played in and that you enjoy very much,” Krafth said.
