The towns, villages and suburbs in Wales with the highest Covid rates

There are 12 areas of Wales with a Covid infection rate above 700 - up from seven the week before. And there are 40 areas with a Covid infection rate of over 600. For this article we have used data published on Friday, April 1.

It provides the numbers for areas with an average of 7,000 residents, called middle super output areas (MSOA). In practice this means there are statistics for areas like Canton in Cardiff, Morriston in Swansea, and Porth in Rhondda.

The data shows there are 12 places in Wales with more than 700 cases per 100,000 of the population. Click here and get our daily coronavirus briefing newsletter sent directly to your inbox.

  • Blaina & Nantyglo, Blaenau Gwent - 990.7
  • Newtown South, Powys - 856.6
  • Ebbw Vale South & Cwm, Blaenau Gwent - 813.3
  • Rassau & Beaufort, Blaenau Gwent - 780.8
  • Pontprennau, Cardiff - 778.3
  • Haverfordwest North, Pembrokeshire - 759.5
  • Bryn-mawr, Blaenau Gwent - 756.8

  • Tredegar & Georgetown, Blaenau Gwent - 718.3
  • Barry West, The Vale of Glamorgan - 714.7
  • Llanrumney South, Cardiff - 713.4

This map shows the number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 people for each area in the last seven days.

It is important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers smaller areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the cases per 100,000 significantly. You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.
