The Tower viewers fume over 'mumbling' characters as ITV show 'needs subtitles'

Fans couldn't wait for hard-hitting drama The Tower to make its debut on ITV on Monday night, but were unfortunately let down by the show's 'poor sound'.

The three-part-series stars Gemma Whelan and Emmett J. Scanlan as they investigate the deaths of two people after they fall from a tower block.

The psychological thriller is said to be full of dramatic twists, however viewers all took to Twitter complaining they couldn't hear what was going on.

One tweeted: "Trying to persevere but the constant mumbling, whispering and generally not opening their mouths when they speak is not helping."

Another asked: "Is There Any Reason Why They Are Talking Like This Really Fast?"

A third advised: "There should be subtitles."

Fans said The Tower needed subtitles (ITV)

While a fourth fumed: "Subtitles activated. Some actors muttering or talking through their teeth. Irritating."

The show stars Hollyoaks actor Emmet as Detective Inspector Kieran Shaw.

However, sadly his Irish accent was lost on a fellow countryman, who said: "I’m Irish and I can’t work out what the Irish bloke is saying."

Another said: "Was looking forward to this but can’t understand a word the policeman with the beard says, terrible accent and mumbled."

However one viewer said that watching Emmet in the Chester-based teen soap had prepared her for the actor's performance on ITV.

She said: "Seeing a lot of tweets about mumbling but for once I’m actual not struggling with the audio on this one…maybe several years of watching Emmett Scanlan in Hollyoaks back in the day prepared me."

The drama follows DS Sarah Collins played by Game of Throne's Gemma as she investigates the mysterious deaths of a police officer and a teenage girl.

Directed by Jim Loach, the programme is based on the first of a series of novels by former Met Police Office's Kate London called Post Mortem.

The show also stars Haunting of Bly Manor actress Tahirah Sharif and Holby City actor Jimmy Akingbola.

The Tower continues tomorrow on ITV at 9pm.
