The toughest of tests for the Guardian to pass

A woman reading the Guardian
The Guardian is a pretty good read, says former Indy reader Andrew Cope, but he wonders whether it’s thick enough to get him out of a dangerous situation. Photograph: Chris Batson/Alamy

I come to the Guardian as a new reader, after 30 years reading the Independent. You are on trial at the moment, and I’d like to pass on some early thoughts.

Firstly, I am concerned by the cricket coverage. Vic Marks is jolly good but you don’t seem to publish full scorecards. Serious fans like me care about the details of Moeen Ali’s two overs in Mumbai, for example.

The cartoons are OK but are not in Dave Brown’s league. Please don’t sack the incumbents, just make BD an offer and have more cartoons.

Personal safety is my other concern. Some years back I was attacked by a large Rottweiler/Alsatian cross on my way back from the newsagent. He grabbed my right arm in his gigantic jaws and I was worried. Fortunately, I had the midweek Independent in my left hand. I rolled it up and hit him on the nose. He released me immediately but then lunged again. I put the Indy between his jaws and my throat and somehow managed to escape. On later inspection he had bitten my paper clean through to the world news (in the central pages).

The Guardian is not as thick as the Indy was. Will I be safe if this happens again? Could you bulk it up a bit, perhaps? Other than this, it is a great paper so far.
