The tough battle already facing Everton youngster after Championship loan move this summer

One Everton youngster already has a stern battle on his hands after completing a loan move to the Championship this summer.

Joao Virginia was instrumental for David Unsworth's U23s across the course of the 2018/19 season, helping them claim a brilliant Premier League 2 and Premier League Trophy double by the end of the campaign.

The goalkeeper was one of the standout stars in what was his first season on the books of the Blues, and it wasn't long before sides showed interest in a temporary move for the Portuguese youth international this summer.

The arrival of Jonas Lossl on a free transfer signified a reshuffle of Everton's goalkeeping options, and it was deemed Virginia would be best placed spending some time on loan.

Last month, Reading confirmed the signing of the Blues youngster for the entirety of the 2019/20 campaign - and that was supposed to signify the start of the next stage for the shot-stopper.

However, just a few games into the season, there is already a battle on his hands.

Having started his new side's opening matches of the campaign against Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City, Virginia has now lost his place in the side.

A few days before the close of the transfer window, Reading brought Rafael Cabral on board to bolster their options in goal, and he has already claimed a starting berth in the club's last two games.

And already Virginia now faces a real fight to earn his place back in to Jose Gomes' side.

"On the evidence of Rafael's first two games, he is now the undisputed no.1," BerkshireLive's Reading correspondent Jonathan Low told the ECHO.

"He saved two penalties in a shootout at Wycombe last Tuesday while he kept a clean sheet on his league debut in the win over Cardiff, making a couple of outstanding stops.

"Virginia may come into the side next week for Plymouth in the Carabao Cup but Gomes may opt to keep Rafael to give him as much game time as possible.

"Unless he makes several big mistakes or gets injured, it's hard to see Virginia getting much of a look-in for the foreseeable future."

The youngster will hope he can quickly turn that opinion around.

Having impressed with Everton last term, the club would have hoped the 19-year-old could get a decent run of matches under his belt so he could continue his rise towards a first team place.

Already, it seems, that might be under threat - and it could be a real test to see how Virginia deals with this competition.
