The touching tribute Love Island made to former presenter Caroline Flack

A heartfelt tribute to tragic TV presenter Caroline Flack was paid on tonight's episode of Love Island.

The ITV2 show underwent a two-day hiatus after news of the death of its former presenter Flack broke over the weekend.

The 40-year-old  is understood to have taken her own life on Saturday at her home in London, according to a statement given by her family's lawyer.

Flack had been charged with assaulting her partner and was due to stand trial in several weeks' time.

ITV announced it had chosen not to air Sunday night's show "out of respect for Caroline's family" but said the show would return on Monday night and would feature a tribute to its former host.

The show began in a sombre fashion with a montage of waves and beaches from the air, while Flack's former co-presenter Iain Stirling delivered an emotional voice over.

He said: "We are all absolutely devastated by tragic news that Caroline, a much-loved member of our Love Island family, has passed away.

"Our thoughts and are with her family and friends at this awful time. Caroline and me were together from the very start of Love Island and her passion, warmth and infectious enthusiasm were a crucial part of what made the show connect with millions of viewers."

Stirling added: "My only hope is that we can all try to be kinder, always show love and listen to one another."

After thanking his co-star for all the good times they shared together, with his voice cracking a little before he said: "You were a true friend. I'm going to miss you Caz."

A photo then was displayed on screen with Flack in swimsuit looking at her radiant best with an on-screen caption reading "Caroline Flack: 1979-2020".

TV viewers said the show would simply not be the same without her.

Love Island fan Claire Davis said on Twitter that Sterling's tribute was very heartfelt adding "An emotional tribute to your beloved friend - somehow feels like she's all ours too even though we didn't know her."

Cara Lennon added: "Felt for Iain Stirling as gave his tribute to Caroline - could really hear the sadness in his voice."

One viewer on Twitter said: "Cries my eyes out... I can just imagine the pain your all going through, so touched by her passing."
