The Tottenham star who is one step away from becoming a Jose Mourinho undroppable

Steven Bergwijn was the Tottenham player to profit from Jose Mourinho's decision to shake things up following his side's draw away at Wolves last Sunday.

Opting for a back three and wing-backs in the 1-1 draw at Molineux, the head coach decided to revert to a back four for the home match against Leeds United.

Sergio Reguilon was the defender to drop out of the team as a result of the switch, with Bergwijn, in the absence of Erik Lamela and Gareth Bale, as well as Lucas Moura only just returning to the squad, coming in to give Harry Kane and Son Heung-min a boost in attack.

Preferred to his rivals for a spot in Tottenham's frontline during the recent big games against Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal, it was easy to see why Mourinho opted for the ex-PSV man as he impressed against Leeds.

Tottenham: 2020 in review

Involved heavily in the opening 45 minutes in both halves of the pitch, the 23-year-old dragged a shot wide of the target early on before teeing up Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg soon after.

Bergwijn was causing problems for Leeds and it wasn't long before he won a penalty on 29 minutes after Ezgjan Alioski had clipped him right on the edge of the box.

A goal to the good after Harry Kane had converted from 12 yards out, the winger really should have made it 2-0 minutes later but he blazed way over the bar from point-blank range after a neat turn to lose his marker and find himself a yard of space.

The miss could have proved crucial given Leeds' attacking qualities and Mourinho threw his hands up in the air and turned to his bench in disgust after his player's shot went into the stands.

It was a very similar reaction from his boss to his two misses at Liverpool prior to Christmas as Mourinho knew they would prove decisive.

Thankfully they didn't against Leeds with Son and Toby Alderweireld scoring either side of the break to complete the scoring.

The hosts had plenty of opportunities to add to the scoreline in the second half, notably Bergwijn when he was played in on goal only for Illan Meslier to produce a wonderful save from his powerful drive.

As good a save as it was from the young Frenchman to keep the score down, Bergwijn really should have scored.

Just not his his day in front of goal, Mourinho hinted after the game that little injuries are hampering the player at the moment but the goals will arrive once his condition improves.

"Yeah, we need him to score goals. Of course we know he has the ability to do that. If you go back one year, his first match and he scored an amazing goal. We know that he has the ability to do that," said the 57-year-old when asked by football.london if Bergwijn missing big chances was a confidence thing or the last bit of the jigsaw he needs to work on.

"He's accumulating also physical problems. I don't know if you could see but even in the last 10 minutes he was touching his groin, he was touching his adductor.

"He's having problems that are stopping him now and again from training properly and at high intensity so he's suffering a little bit.

"But of course he gives very good things to the team. I believe the goals will arrive if his condition improves."

Three goals and five assists to his name since joining 12 months ago from the Eredivisie, Bergwijn needs to add goals to his game sooner rather than later to help ease the burden on Son and Kane.

He's most definitely capable of doing that after hitting 31 in his 149 games for PSV, however.

Clearly a positive that he's getting in the right positions first of all to shoot on goal, it may be a case of the goals start to flow once he manages to register his first of the 2020/21 season.

In a battle with Lucas, Lamela and Bale for the final place in Mourinho's dream attack, Bergwijn can make himself an undroppable if he manages to improve on his finishing and starts taking the chances that come his way.

Clearly impressing Mourinho of late with his work in both defence and attack, Tottenham fans could soon be about to see the very best of Bergwijn if he fixes the aspect of his game that is unfortunately letting him down at the moment.
