The Tottenham morning headlines as Kane sent transfer advice and latest on Vertonghen's future

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Wednesday, April 1.

Paul Merson suggests that Harry Kane should leave Spurs

Harry Kane’s comment that he wouldn’t stay at Tottenham “for the sake of it”, and wanted to see the club continuing to progress in accordance with his own career, caused something of a stir.

Several pundits have since had their say on what Kane’s future could hold, and Paul Merson is the latest to offer up his opinion.

The former Arsenal player told Sky Sports that, considering the direction Spurs are currently heading in, Kane could enjoy a brighter future elsewhere.

“If Harry Kane wants to win stuff, he may have to leave Tottenham,” said Merson.

Alasdair Gold on Spurs' need to find a replacement Fernando Llorente

“Will Kane get six or seven chances a game playing the way Jose Mourinho does? I don’t think so. For me that’s what he needs to weigh up.

“He loves scoring goals, he wants to play for an attacking team, but I don’t see that happening next season, if Mourinho makes it tight and starts playing the way that made him one of the best managers of all time, and I think that’s what Kane is weighing up.”

Daniel Levy announces pay-cut for Tottenham staff

With clubs across the world learning to live with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has suggested that savings have to be found.

Yesterday, Levy confirmed that the club’s 550 staff will have their wages reduced by 20% during April and May, with the government’s furlough scheme being used where appropriate.

In a statement published on the Tottenham website, Levy wrote: “It is incumbent on me as Chairman to ensure we do everything we can to protect our employees, our fans, our partners, our Club for future generations – and equally important – our wider community where we have such an immense sense of responsibility.”

“I wish everyone good health, a speedy return to normal life and watching Spurs at home in front of our fans. Stay safe.”

Jan Vertonghen’s future could be decided later today

The general uncertainty that has engulfed football over recent weeks has implications for lots of players too, particularly those whose contracts were set to expire in the summer.

Jan Vertonghen is the main example at Spurs, with UEFA set to carry out about what an extension to the current season could mean for players in his situation.

In yesterday’s Q&A, football.london’s Alasdair Gold said that, following a UEFA video conference meeting, there should be an update later today providing more clarity.

“The general secretaries of all 55 members associations of UEFA will share an update on the progress made by two working groups that were created two weeks ago and to discuss options identified with regards to the potential rescheduling of matches.

“The meeting will look at developments across all national team and club competitions, as well as discussing progress at FIFA and European level on matters such as player contracts and the transfer system.”
