The Tottenham flop who could ruin Mikel Arteta's January transfer plans at Arsenal

Former Spurs player Federico Fazio could end up having a detrimental effect on Arsenal's plans for the January transfer window.

The 33-year-old, who is currently with Roma, is being tracked by Spanish giants Barcelona according to Italian outfit Romanews.eu .

Barca are short of central defenders and are understood to be in the market to acquire a cheap, stop-gap solution in January.

If they move for Fazio, it could mean that Arsenal are forced to let Shkodran Mustafi leave for free next summer, with the German World Cup winner also having been linked with a switch to the Catalan club.

Arsenal would likely much rather receive a fee for Mustafi's services in January than see him depart for nothing at the end of the season.

He turned down the opportunity to extend his stay in North London earlier this year and is understood to be looking to move on to pastures new at the end of the season.

Antonio Rudiger, Joel Matip, German Pezella and Mateo Mussachio are also said to be on Barcelona's radar.

Mustafi joined Arsenal from Valencia in 2016 for a reported fee in excess of £35 million and has made 146 appearances for the club.

However, he has only featured twice this season following the arrival of Brazil international Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille in the summer.

The Gunners have made a lukewarm start to the season, having won just four of their opening eight Premier League matches.

Mikel Arteta 's side will be looking for a return to winning ways at Leeds United on Sunday after falling to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa before the international break.
